EnlightenU - Off-Camera Flash, On-Location!

Yesterday, Rob and I hosted our second part, shooting seminar, for off-camera flash. Off-camera flash is something that you see me using quite a bit, and it's a great technique for creating dramatic and unique-looking images that stand out from the crowd.

This is our lovely Kaycee, who so graciously agreed to be our model while we talked and talked and talked about off-camera flash. She was so patient!

In this shot, we used just a little bit of off-camera flash to fill in Kaycee's face, from camera left.

Here's another off-camera flash shot, where the flash was used to help expand our dynamic range. If we weren't using off-camera flash, and we wanted to get the rich blue sky, Kaycee would have been in complete shadow. If we wanted to get a good exposure on Kaycee, the background would have been completely blown out. So, to fix this issue, we exposed for the background, and then lit Kaycee with the off-camera flash.

I love the 3-dimensional look to off-camera flash. So beautiful!

Look at the difference in these next two images. For this image here, we used the off-camera flash to fill-in the left side (camera right) of Kaycee's face.

Here is that same shot, without the flash.

A lot of the time, I hear photographers saying that our flashes aren't powerful enough to be using them outside, or that they don't pack enough punch. But, I don't know how much more punch you'd need than we had here. I mean, our flash matched the SUN in this picture, and I was only shooting at 1/2 power!

These little guys are more powerful than you may think!

Here's another great off-camera flash technique. I love the drama!

Look at how the off-camera flash allows me to bring down the ambient light to really focus in on Kaycee. Amazing!

One of those "aha" moments ... I love it!

There's Ally! Oh ... with the D90. Interesting! That must mean that there is video to come ... Hmmm!

Here's a quick off-camera flash shot that I took of part of my second group. We were just showing off how quick and effective off-camera flash can be, and how you can use it to create that drama and sexyness!

Another subtle off-camera flash shot with Kaycee.

We headed back to the studio to show how you can use off-camera flash indoors, and at the reception. Here's a shot of Emma and Jeremy having their "first dance".

And the last one, of the lovely Karen. We were showing how even with the most boring of backgrounds (here we had a beige wall), you can get some really cool, dramatic images.
